Because it is important that your dog always have a ready supply of fresh water an automatic dog waterer may be a good idea.
While there are many styles of dog waterers most work on one of three principles: (1) The water is held in a reservoir above the dish and gravity causes it to flow into the dish as needed. (2) Electric pump is used to supply and sometimes aerate the water. (3) A water line (such as a outdoor water hose)is connected to a float valve to supply fresh water.
The Reservoir/Gravity Type
The reservoir/gravity type are usually inexpensive and can be found at most pet supply outlets.

Electronic Waterers
One advantage of an electronic waterer over the reservoir/gravity type is that some of these units aerate for fresher healthier water. Some use a battery and others plug in to a wall outlet. A unit like the Drinkwell Big-Dog Pet Fountain recycles the water from the bowel to the reservoir and the water is purified with a charcoal filter. Drinkwell Big-Dog Pet Fountain
Float valve unit
Some automatic waterers use a float valve and a water line such as a water hose to regularly supply fresh water. This is especially good for dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors.
